When I go to Rakkasah I see Zoe. Zoe is the granddaughter of Shukriya. I like to play with Zoe and I like to have sleep overs with her. But me and Zoe also take my mom’s workshops. It happens every year. Since now I am level 1 certified I have to help her with all the workshop but since I’m in the Nutcracker then I can’t really help her while I’m gone. But I’m also looking forward to getting level 2 certified so I can help her more.
Zoe and I get stuff for free at Rakkasah too. I don’t know why, but the vendors just give us stuff even though we are not famous. If I really want something my mom will buy it for me too. We like to get  on stage and dance during the open dance times as well as doing our own shows. We also sell candy at Rakkasah and we make money for the poor animals.
Zoe is a vegetarian so she can’t eat meat. So once she said to me I won’t eat anything that pooped and has eyeballs. That was the funniest thing in my life. I felt so weird that I wouldn’t eat any meat at Rakkasah. Except for the hot dogs, they were good.
Rakkasah is fun.

This month is a time of family, community, and a thought process going towards a new year. This is my favorite time of year. I love the holidays, creating ritual and making excuses for having a party, it is the most fantastic way of life. Plus, it is my birthday month so it makes it a little more magical.
Reflecting on this last month/year makes my head spin. Coming back from Germany (with workshops in Munich and Hannover) was so fulfilling. We are starting such a huge movement in Europe and having Germany as the final stop was like the cherry on the cake. I had planned to go to Germany years ago and after September 11th I cancelled my tour. Being given a second chance to bring my format to Germany brought my goals full circle. Then, to end the year with workshops in both Toronto with Audra ( whom we love and appreciate all the hard work she dedicates to me and the art form), and Vancouver with Martina (whom did a wonderful job and accomplished our goals of exposing the format to the Vancouver area) was perfect. We did our first certification test in Toronto and now have sisters in Canada! Now we are planning “Continued Education” workshops (with Tiffany) for 2007 in Toronto. I think next year we will have a chance to certify in Vancouver too.
So I look back at 2006 knowing that so much has happened, and that there is so much to come. This year has been a year of rooting, growing, and taking Suhaila Productions to the next level. I can’t wait to share with you projects that will be coming in 2007. Breaking ground and expanding once again. I guess that is just my fate! My family wishes you and your family a very happy holiday season and a happy and healthy new year!

It was always around early May that I knew to leave my mother alone. The house got busy and her focus was so intense that she would stop cooking and we would eat out every night. Always healthy food (salad bars, fresh homemade soup, ect), but the point was not to bother mom. There was an unspoken deal that my mom and I made to have no drama until after the weeklong workshop and festival which was always held the first week of June.
In 1972 my mom produced the first weeklong workshop and 2-day festival Baghdad by the Bay. We had the workshop in her studio on Broadway in San Francisco, and the festival was in a hotel in San Francisco. Before this format of festivals, mom used to rent a bus (and be the driver) and take all her students around to the shops that had belly dance supplies. Each store would close for the day and have finger food for the students to munch while they shopped. It was a long hard day (especially for a little girl; myself). Then one year she decided to bring all the vendors under one roof and have the first festival in the format that has become popular today.
After the workshop and festival mom would get the flu (like clockwork) and be in bed a whole week after the event. I just stayed in my room and waited for her to emerge and we would continue life as if nothing happened. I use to feel sorry for my mom since she never had much help and did everything herself; marketing, managing, teaching, producing, directing, leading public relations, setting up/taking down, choreographing, and during the festival even took all the music and pressed “play” for each and every performer. Mom never even took a break to go to the bathroom, eat, or even look up to take a breath. No one knows how hard it is to produce workshops or festivals; except those who do them.

At every Rakkasah I feel like I’m celebrating my belly dance anniversary. Since I began dancing with Suhaila, Rakkasah has been a pinnacle event each year. My first Rakkasah, I walked in having a good idea of what to expect because Suhaila prepared us so well, but I was still completely blown away. Not only was it my first time in front of such a large audience (in hot pants J), but the event was massive….entirely overwhelming! I couldn’t believe how many people traveled from all continents to be together for this week of workshops, performances and gathering belly-dancing accoutrements. The sense of grandness, desire for community and the sharing of each individual’s perspective and offering to the art was seen on all sorts of canvases. I also knew that I was seeing the evolution of a concept that began with Jamila, which made me respect the event and the efforts behind it from Shukriya even more, feeling that through the belly dance family tree we were all related. Suhaila made a point to instill in us proper respect and understanding of what Rakkasah represented, who Shukriya was, how she was related to her and her mother. She also reminded us that it was important to be aware of our responses, opinions and actions because not only did they reflect upon her, but her desire to support and represent her community in a positive way was a goal we were a part of. This awareness made us feel responsible for the members of the community as we would a family member.
