My First Trip to Egypt

 -by Isabella Antoinette Salimpour Khoury

I went to Egypt and it was a really BIG experience.  I was the first kid to dance at Raqia’s Festival.  I was in the newspapers.  My greatest experience I loved was being on the camels, because I went around the pyramids.  Then I saw King Tut on a statue.  His place was the best experience I’ve ever had in my whole life.  And it’s weird because we travel all over the world and I remember everything in Asia, Europe and Africa.  Dancing in Egypt was really hard, not for me to dance, but it was hard to get in because I was a kid.  But once I danced I felt that I got more dance in my heart than I normally do because I was trying to dance the best I could.

This last month was so full of inspiration.  The studio was filled with two weeklong workshops and the first level 3 in years.  It was fantastic!  I congratulate all the students in level 3 for the commitment and dedication during this week.  You survived!  It is because of all of you that I am now having two level 3 weeklong workshops a year.  Now the work gets really fun.  And people think I’m only good for a few glute squeezes…hah!

The new web site is finally done and we are very excited to finally have the finished product of years of planning and designing.  Andre and I want to thank the whole team; Tiffany, Chris, Kevin, and each and every one of you that helped to put together this new direction in our business.  It is exciting to see the every growing and changing face of Suhaila Productions.

So now with this new school year we are planning a new series of productions and the already full calendar for 2007.  I hope to see you in a workshop soon in the future.

Editorial by Suhaila®

As our plane landed in Egypt I felt nervous.  I didn’t know why, but my heart was pounding.  I guess I felt worried that my family would be unhappy and not let me forget the fact that I dragged them to Egypt when they really didn’t want to go at this time.  It was my selfish desire to bring my format to Egypt and to see first hand the festival that Raqia Hassan has built.  At least in Paris Andre could go out for beer and hang out.  What would he do in Egypt?  Being an Arab American himself made it even worse since he would know what each man was thinking.  But being the wonderful husband that he is we landed in Egypt with nothing expected but diarrhea.

After a smooth clearance and luggage pick up (which was our fist shocker) we headed outside to the van that was ready to pick us up from “Lady Egypt Travel Agency”.  Lady Egypt Travel Agency is the company that Raqia uses along with her festival just in case the attendees want to go site seeing outside of the hotel and festival venue.  We were so grateful to have them assist us in any way we needed. They would even assist us in ways we didn’t know we needed.  As the doors to the airport opened I felt the hot breeze that I remember from years ago followed by the “call to prayer”.  I closed my eyes and listened to the beautiful sounds that filled the city.  I felt like crying and as each “call to prayer” came through echoing one after the other. I just stood unable to move.  As my eyes were closed I felt my father.  He had died when I was 9 years old, but until the day he passed every Friday he would play the sounds of the Koran though the house.  Somehow it was soothing to me and I felt helpless and missed my father more than I have in years.  I lost time and it wasn’t until I opened my eyes to see Andre looking in a trance as well did I realize that we were truly Arab/Americans coming home.

Attending this Workshop has been an inspiring life changing experience. Suhaila is a warm-hearted woman whose passion is the dance, and has become my inspiration. Through this experience, she has helped me internalize every moment, and has taken me to a new level of the dance. She and her staff are down to earth, and you can tell they all love their work. I can’t wait to take another workshop to further my dance knowledge and have a great time and meet new friends, who all share the same love.

Level III

Tiffany Bisconer by Tiffany Bisconer

The night before the Level III Workshop this past August I could barely sleep.  Half of my brain was mulling over last minute organizational things that need to be set up before every workshop and the other half was personally excited, nervous and giddy to dive into a full week of being a student…..my favorite role to be in.  What excited me was knowing not only would I be able to take a workshop with Suhaila, but that I would be with other dancers that have a similar drive, focus and desire within this art form.  To have an interest in Level III and higher of Suhaila’s Format and vision, there has to be a passion that leads a dancer towards an artistic path.  Not only to be a performer, but to be an artist with a personal point of view and message that is burning to come across through dance.  In the level III workshop this is what Suhaila successfully milks out of each individual.  For me this week was a time for me to reconnect with my artistic goals and the work that I was handed to dive into created a bridge for me to walk into the next stage of growth of my personal voice.  It’s hard to explain the impact it has to be in a completely safe artistic environment where you can feel completely estranged from a practical sense of “reality” but what you’re in is an even higher place of consciousness and awareness….even more real.

      Who I am

Trish Morehead (Kitiera) currently lives near Seattle, WA. She has been belly dancing since childhood, and recently became level 2 certified in the Suhaila Salimpour format. She performs and teaches several styles of Middle Eastern and World dance. She is currently promoting her Modrom dance project and is planning for a 2007 tour. Visit her at www.kitiera.net

Who am I?

It all began with a question that had been frantically burning in the back of my mind since I committed to the Suhaila technique...

Should I drop my stage name?

Not hard to notice-- no other dancers in Suhaila's school take stage names. Suhaila, Tiffany, Kendra, Crystal, Renee, they all use their given names. And I knew the answer in my heart before I asked her why.

I asked anyway, and Suhaila reminded me that as an artist, it makes no sense to distance yourself from your identity. You lose authenticity. She suggested I adopt Kitiera into my legal name (which I plan to do very soon), but also, that I ask myself.... "Why isn't Trish good enough?"

Ouch. Since I didn't think I had any serious self esteem issues, that remark cut me to the very core of my being. And here I am, wondering... who am I?

Certainly, name changes are not new for me. In my life I have been Patricia, Tricia, Trish, Reine, Niara, Kitiera Niare, Kitiera. I was relieved to drop my surname, which I never identified with, when I married my husband. I also have 2 Native American names. I even invented a 2nd mid dle name for myself, Katrina, just for fun, when I was in middle school. So why am I struggling with the issues surrounding changing my dance name to my real name?

I took the dance name Kitiera Niare when I was 15 years old. It was custom in my troupe to adopt a stage character, and it definitely helped me perform. It allowed me to distance myself from my stage fright and to dance more theatrically and emotionally than I would have, otherwise. In a way, I was allowing myself to build Kitiera's stage character, her personality, her identity, into my ideal image. As her, I could explore feelings Trish may never have had the courage to share with her audience, like fear, sadness, diva-hood, sensuality, surrender, and vulnerability.

When I moved to Charleston I dropped the "Niare" from the end of my stage name to be just Kitiera. It resonated better, rolled off the tongue easily like other dancers' names: Jillina, Suhaila, Aziza, Fatima, Farhana, Amira, Saida, etc, etc.  I notice that in this list of names off the top of my head, only Suhaila's name is her given name. Kitiera is not Arabic, although in slang Egyptian it sounds like the adjective to describe "a lot" of something. I picked the name Kitiera from a popular series of science fiction novels, because I didn't want to be like every other dancer on the planet. It's definitely unique!

But as I ponder the identity I have fashioned for myself, I know that I also (at long last!) yearn to just be ... me. Emotionally naked in front of my audience, I long to speak to them from my heart, the heart of a woman who is struggling to find herself. I long to dance with roots, with history. Instead of mystery and drama, I long to dance as a woman who has embraced her birth and her destiny.

Yet, in my dreams I see Kitiera with tear-filled eyes, staring at my dream-self, and I am overwhelmed by feelings of guilt and abandonment. She is my creation, born of not only my flesh but also of my spirit. I cannot throw her aside to embrace a new life. I must somehow retrieve that half of my soul that I gave to her without destroying her or me in the process.

Who am I?

In Twyla Tharp's book, "The Creative Habit," she talks about the zen masters who change their name (just once) when they feel that they at last have achieved mastery. I feel rather backwards, having used a stage name as a crutch until now I am feeling like perhaps I am ready to try to perform without it. But I am so afraid.

For 15 years I have a built a reputation and an image as Kitiera. People won't recognize my given name, and I'll have to start completely anew.

Who am I?

Her or me? More her than me? I carved her image, creating a character which was all the things I longed to be, then worked so hard to be like her in all aspects of life. Maybe I am Kitiera now, but I want deeper roots. I want to stand on that stage and be able to acc ess the emotions I felt as a small child in rural Kentucky. As a teenager who saw the ocean at age 16, and felt the pull west ever since. As a very, very lucky woman who met her soul mate at age 18. Who followed her destiny west and embraced it, and stands here today.

Who am I?

I am:  Patricia Kitiera Marie Morehead.

The truth is, no matter which part of my name I wear today, the strength of the part that remains unsaid surrounds and supports me, allowing me to step forward in the world and live up to my potential as an artist, as an American woman, and as a human being.

Thank you, Suhaila, for helping me to realize that.
